Choosing the Right Shower System

Showerpipe, concealed system or a simple overhead? A practical guide to the decision that most affects how a bathroom feels every morning.

A shower is the most frequently used element in a bathroom and the one clients most often wish they had specified differently. The good news is that the decision breaks down into three questions, and answering them in order removes most of the difficulty.

First: exposed, concealed, or showerpipe?

Showerpipe

A complete column carrying the overhead shower, hand shower and mixer, fixed to the wall surface. It is the most straightforward to install, requires no wall chasing, and is the natural choice for renovation work where opening the wall is impractical. Modern showerpipes are designed as objects in their own right, so this is no longer a compromise.

Concealed system

The valve body is buried in the wall and only a plate, handles and outlets are visible. This gives the cleanest possible result and is what most contemporary bathrooms specify — but it has to be decided before the walls are closed, and it demands a properly engineered concealed body.

Exposed mixer

A wall-mounted mixer with a riser rail or a separate overhead. Simple, serviceable and inexpensive relative to the alternatives. Appropriate for guest and secondary bathrooms where the budget is better spent elsewhere.

Second: how many outlets do you actually need?

The honest answer for most bathrooms is two — an overhead and a hand shower. The hand shower is not a luxury item; it is what makes the enclosure cleanable and the shower usable for washing hair, children and pets.

Additional outlets — body jets, a second overhead, a bath filler on the same valve — each need to be supported by the water supply. A thermostat sized for two outlets running four will deliver a disappointing result at all of them. This is worth checking before the specification is fixed rather than after.

Third: choose the spray, not the specification sheet

Two overhead showers with identical dimensions and flow rates can feel completely different. The variables that matter are droplet size, how much air is carried in the water, the density of coverage across the spray face, and how quietly it delivers.

Hansgrohe is unusually explicit about this, and its spray technologies are a useful vocabulary for the differences:

  • PowderRain breaks water into a large number of very fine droplets, producing a soft, enveloping spray that is noticeably quieter and wets the body more evenly.
  • AirPower draws air into the water so droplets arrive fuller and softer, with less of the hard needling sensation.
  • EcoSmart limits flow — typically to around 9 litres per minute or lower — while maintaining the feel of the spray, which matters where supply is limited.
  • QuickClean silicone nozzles let limescale be rubbed off by hand, which is the difference between a shower that still performs in year five and one that does not.

None of these is objectively best. A soft PowderRain spray is wonderful for a long evening shower and can feel insufficiently brisk to someone who wants to be woken up. This is precisely the decision worth making in person.

Thermostatic control is not optional

A thermostatic valve holds the outlet temperature steady when supply pressure changes elsewhere in the house, and includes a safety stop — typically at 38°C — that prevents scalding. In a home with children or elderly residents this should be treated as a requirement rather than an upgrade.

Match the finish to the rest of the room

Shower components are usually the largest area of visible metal in a bathroom. Whatever finish is chosen here should carry through to the basin mixers, accessories and, where possible, the flush plate and shower channel.
